Enhancing safety and visibility: The power of semi-rigid steel delineation posts

If you have ever driven on a rural highway at night or passed through an active construction zone, the steel posts lining the corridor are doing more work than they might seem. Marker posts identify road edges, define boundaries, and flag critical assets and hazards along the route. Get the specification wrong, and they fail when you need them most.

Delnorth semi-rigid steel marker posts are an Australian-made solution built specifically for these conditions. Available in straight edge and rolled edge profiles, they comply with AS 1742 and AS 1397 standards, withstand repeated impacts, and can be re-straightened on-site rather than completely replaced.

What are semi-rigid steel marker posts?

Marker posts are roadside delineation devices used to define road edges, boundaries, and key infrastructure assets. Semi-rigid steel posts sit between fully flexible polymer posts and rigid steel posts on the delineation spectrum. They bend on impact rather than snapping, and can be re-straightened multiple times, significantly reducing replacement costs.

They are most commonly installed on highways, rural roads, construction zones, industrial sites, and areas where reliable, long-lasting boundary marking is required.

Straight edge marker posts

The Straight Edge marker posts are designed to comply with AS 1742 standards. Crafted from high-tensile G450 Z350 galvanised steel as per AS 1397, these posts offer exceptional durability. With a 1.6mm powder-coated finish for regular duty and 2.0mm for heavy-duty applications, they ensure longevity in demanding environments. The straight edge design is available in custom colours and lengths, providing flexibility to meet specific project requirements. Each post comes with snap-on safety end caps in black or white for added protection.

Rolled-edge marker posts

The Rolled Edge marker posts are also constructed from high-tensile G450 Z350 galvanised steel, also meeting AS 1397. These posts feature a powder-coated finish with an overall thickness of 1.6 mm. Like the straight-edge design, the rolled-edge posts can be customised in any colour and length to suit individual needs. They come with snap-on safety end caps in black or white for enhanced durability and protection.

The rolled edge profile features a folded, rounded edge rather than a sharp-cut finish. This design reduces the risk of injury or snagging during handling and installation.

Straight edge vs rolled edge: Which one is right for your project?

Both designs share the same core materials and performance characteristics. The main difference lies in the edge profile, which affects handling safety and suitability for application.

Where are semi-rigid steel marker posts used?

Delnorth semi-rigid steel marker posts are used across a wide range of road, industrial, and infrastructure applications in Australia. Common uses include:

  • Highway and rural road delineation: Defining road edges on high-speed rural and highway corridors in accordance with AS 1742.
  • Construction site boundary marking: Identifying exclusion zones, asset edges, and hazard boundaries on active worksites.
  • Industrial facility marking: Identifying pipelines, cables, and other underground or overhead assets using colour-coded posts and identification plates.
  • Floodway and drainage infrastructure: Providing visibility of road edges near floodways, where tighter post spacing (approximately 25m) is required under Australian guidelines.

Installation and Maintenance

Delnorth semi-rigid steel marker posts are available in two installation configurations:

  • Anchor-in: Driven into the ground using a manual or mechanical post driver to a minimum depth of 400mm. Dual retention barbs lock the post in place and testing has shown that a removal force of over 500kg is required when correctly installed.
  • Surface mount: For sealed surfaces or areas where ground penetration is not possible.

Installation typically only needs one worker. Depth markers on the post help make sure you get correct positioning every time, and removal holes allow the post to be extracted cleanly if they need to be relocated.

After an impact, posts can be re-straightened on-site without replacement. This significantly reduces maintenance costs on high-traffic routes where impact damage is common. Posts are also recyclable at end of life, supporting infrastructure sustainability requirements.

Australian-made for Australian conditions

Delnorth marker posts are designed and manufactured in Australia, specifically for the conditions encountered on Australian roads and sites. The galvanised steel construction meets corrosion protection requirements against salt spray (ASTM B-117), making the posts suitable for coastal, tropical, and high-humidity environments. The powder coat finish is rated to retain at least 75% of its colour, appearance, and physical properties after 10 years of exposure.

  • Posts are supplied with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty and can be fitted with:
  • Retroreflective sheeting to AS/NZS 1906.1 for night visibility
  • Asset identification plates or stickers for utility and infrastructure marking
  • Colour-coded delineation to identify specific assets or zones
  • Snap-on safety end caps in black or white

Standards

Delnorth semi-rigid steel marker posts comply with the following standards:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a marker post and a guide post?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a functional distinction. Guide posts (or delineator posts) are primarily used to guide drivers along the road edge and through curves, particularly at night or in poor visibility. Marker posts serve a broader role, covering asset identification, boundary marking, hazard flagging, and utility detection, in addition to road-edge delineation. Delnorth offers both guide posts and marker posts in semi-rigid steel to suit each application.
Semi-rigid refers to the post’s ability to flex and bend on impact without breaking, and then be re-straightened and reused. Unlike fully rigid posts that can snap or permanently deform when struck, and unlike fully flexible posts that return to upright automatically, semi-rigid steel posts offer a middle ground: they are robust enough to hold a reflector plate or identification sticker securely, but forgiving enough to survive vehicle impact and be restored on-site. This matters for maintenance budgets on high-traffic roads where post replacement would otherwise be frequent and costly.

Delnorth straight-edge marker posts are designed to comply with AS 1742 (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices), with the steel material meeting AS 1397 (G450 Z350 galvanised steel). Retroreflective sheeting options comply with AS/NZS 1906.1. Post placement on public roads should follow the spacing and positioning requirements set out in AS 1742.2-2009, which specifies requirements by road type, speed zone, and location (curves, floodways, merges, and so on).

Yes. The G450 Z350 galvanised steel provides corrosion protection that meets ASTM B-117 salt spray standards, making the posts suitable for coastal, tropical, and high-humidity environments. The powder-coated finish adds a further protective barrier and is rated to retain at least 75% of colour, appearance, and physical properties for 10 years, even in harsh conditions.

Where ground penetration is not possible or practical (for example, on a sealed road shoulder or concrete slab), the surface mount configuration is available. For unsealed ground, the anchor-in configuration is the standard approach, with the post driven to a minimum depth of 400mm using a manual or mechanical post driver. Contact Delnorth to confirm which configuration suits your specific site conditions.
