Steel-Flex: the world’s toughest delineator post

Cairns Regional Council needed a cost-effective solution to alert motorists to a potentially dangerous open drain alongside a busy road.
For this project, the team at Cairns Regional Council chose the SM10D2 Steel-Flex white delineator post with a flexible surface-mountable base to solve their hazardous open culvert situation.
The challenges
Council had an ongoing issue with vehicles being parked extremely close to the edge of the drain along Brown Street in the heart of Cairns, which was creating potential safety issues.
The Council team also reported a recent incident in which a car attempting to do a U-turn drove into the flooded drain by mistake during an extreme weather event.
It was clear that a safety solution was needed to ensure motorists were aware of the hazard.
Our solution
The Cairns Regional Council drainage team installed Delnorth’s flexible surface mount Steel-Flex guideposts to safely mark the edge of the concrete-lined drain. This provided a cost-effective solution to assist with the protection and the safety of road users.
The proven durability of Steel-Flex guideposts provides long-term cost benefits, reducing both maintenance costs and the outlay for replacement posts. These tough delineator posts can withstand repeated impacts and drive-over events by vehicles, with minimal damage to the post or the vehicle.
There is a range of different options available to suit most requirements, and installation is quick and easy, reducing exposure risk for installation teams.
The Steel-Flex posts are roll-formed from a high-performance spring steel and protected by thermal diffusion galvanised coating, with each post powder coated to provide a high gloss, UV-resistant colour finish. Steel-Flex is available in a wide range of colours and can be fitted with any delineation or signage that our customers require. Its unique design and manufacturing process give Steel-Flex exceptionally high corrosion resistance, even after being impacted.
Steel-Flex delineator posts return to vertical automatically after repeated vehicle impacts. They have been tested to 10 impacts from a passenger-type vehicle at 100 kph without compromising the integrity of the post.
Additionally, these posts have been tested to ten wheel-overs at 50kph from a fully laden 42-tonne truck, without compromising the integrity of the post.
