Enhancing road safety with durable delineation posts

Delineation posts are essential for ensuring clear visibility on roads, marking boundaries and construction sites, and industrial areas. In this blog post, we will explore three remarkable products: Semi-rigid steel delineation posts, Steel-Flex® delineation posts, and Dura-Post® Flexi360 delineation posts.

Each of these products offers unique features and benefits that cater to diverse needs in the field of road safety and infrastructure marking.

What are delineation posts?

Delineation posts are roadside markers that define the edge of a road, carriageway, or boundary. They are a requirement under AS 1742.2, the Australian standard for traffic control devices, which specifies where posts must be placed, how they must be spaced, and what retroreflective performance they need to provide.

On a straight highway, posts can be spaced up to 300m apart. On a tight curve, spacing can drop to as little as 6m. Near floodways, the standard calls for approximately 25m spacing. Getting post placement right is not just about compliance; it directly affects how clearly a driver can read the road at night or in bad weather.

In addition to road edges, delineation posts are commonly used to identify underground utilities, pipeline routes, property boundaries, and infrastructure assets across industrial and construction sites. In these applications, colour coding and identification plates carry as much importance as reflectivity.

Semi-rigid steel delineation posts

Semi-rigid steel posts are a middle ground between fully flexible and fully rigid designs. They are strong enough to hold reflective sheeting and identification plates securely, but flexible enough to bend on impact and be re-straightened on site without replacement. This combination makes them the ideal choice for long-running highway corridors and industrial asset marking where post longevity and low maintenance cost matter.

  • Straight Edge marker posts: these posts comply with AS 1742.2 standards and are constructed from high tensile G450 Z350 galvanised steel. With customisable lengths and a powder-coated finish, they ensure durability and visibility in demanding environments.
  • Rolled Edge marker posts: crafted from the same high-tensile galvanised steel, these posts feature a rolled edge design and offer customisation in colour and length. The snap-on safety end caps provide enhanced durability and protection.

Both variants are available in lengths from 1.35m to 3m and can be specified in any colour to meet project requirements. The rolled edge profile provides a safer handling surface, which is an important detail for posts installed near pedestrian or shared path areas.

Red and white flexible guidepost

Dura-Post® Flexi360 delineation posts

With exceptional durability and flexibility, these posts are designed with a drivable anchor, a flexible joint, and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) post tops. The Flexi360 offers reliable performance in high-impact zones, and its ability to rebound to the vertical position minimises damage and reduces the need for constant replacements. Flexi360 adapts to high, medium, and low impact zones, making it suitable for diverse environments. Complying with Australian standards and featuring self-extinguishing materials, it contributes to improved road safety and reduces the risk of fire incidents. The drivable anchor simplifies installation, and the replaceable post tops streamline maintenance. Manufactured in Australia, Flexi360 is 100% recyclable, offers a guaranteed lifespan of 10+ years, and reduces waste and costs.

How to choose the right delineation post

Recommended Post by Scenario
Scenario Recommended post
Rural highway edge delineation Semi-rigid steel or Steel-Flex® 1-piece (drive-in)
High-speed road with frequent impact Steel-Flex® (auto-recovery) or Flexi360 (multi-directional recovery)
Sealed road, no ground penetration available Steel-Flex® Flexi-T or Flexi360 surface mount
Concrete hardstand or warehouse floor Steel-Flex® surface mount or Flexi360 bolt-down
Coastal or high-humidity environment Steel-Flex® with ArmorGalv®
Cycleway or shared path Dura-Post® Flexi360 (approved for cycleway use)
Industrial asset or utility marking Semi-rigid steel with colour coding and ID plates
Bushfire-prone zone Dura-Post® Flexi360 (self-extinguishing HDPE)

All three post systems are Australian-made, comply with AS 1742.2 requirements, and are backed by 10-year warranties. The decision between them comes down to site conditions: the type of surface, expected impact frequency, environmental exposure, and maintenance access. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a guide post and a marker post?

Guide posts are primarily used to mark the boundary of a road, known as road edge delineation, helping drivers identify the road boundary at night or in low-visibility conditions. Marker posts are also used to identify underground utilities, pipelines, cables, and other infrastructure assets. Marker posts are commonly colour-coded and fitted with identification plates or stickers. Both types are available in semi-rigid steel, flexible steel, and flexible polymer designs, depending on what your project needs.

Steel-Flex® and Dura-Post® Flexi360 are designed specifically for self-recovery after impact, returning to the upright position without manual intervention. Steel-Flex® uses a spring steel design that bends 90 degrees and rebounds. Flexi360 uses a 360-degree flexible joint for multi-directional recovery. Semi-rigid steel posts can also survive multiple impacts but require on-site re-straightening rather than self-recovery. The best choice depends on how frequently impacts occur and how quickly maintenance crews can respond.

The primary standard governing delineation post placement and performance in Australia is AS 1742.2 (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Part 2). This standard specifies where posts must be placed, minimum post spacing by road type and speed zone, and retroreflective performance requirements. Retroreflective sheeting must comply with AS/NZS 1906.1. Steel material grades are governed by AS 1397. All three Delnorth post systems are designed to comply with these standards, with the Flexi360 also meeting British and European standard EN 12899-3:2008.

Yes. Both Steel-Flex® and Dura-Post® Flexi360 offer surface mount or bolt-down installation options that do not require core drilling or ground penetration. The Steel-Flex® Flexi-T variant uses a T-shaped picket base for sealed surfaces. The Flexi360 is available with a glue-down or bolt-down surface mount base. Semi-rigid steel posts can also be surface-mounted in certain configurations. Contact Delnorth to confirm the appropriate base option for your surface type and load requirements.

All three Delnorth delineation post systems are backed by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. Steel-Flex® ArmorGalv® corrosion protection is rated to ASTM B-117 salt spray standards, and the powder-coated finish on semi-rigid steel posts is rated to retain at least 75% of colour and physical properties for 10 years. Dura-Post® Flexi360 HDPE post tops are UV-stabilised and tested for 2,000 hours in extreme weather conditions. Where posts do wear, the Flexi360 post top can be replaced independently of the anchor, reducing replacement cost significantly.
